What are mice?
Mice are small rodents, and like all rodents, they have front incisors that grow continuously throughout their lives. Their teeth are one of their most important assets; they allow them to eat, gather materials to build their nests, and defend themselves, among other things.
Mice are highly adaptable, they can jump more than a foot in height, and they have an excellent sense of smell, which are just some of the reasons why these pests are so difficult to keep out of our homes and businesses.
Mice are identified by their oval-shaped body, long tail, and large ears that stand up off their heads covered in a light layer of velvety fur. The fur covering their body ranges from light brown to black, with their belly usually having lighter or white-colored fur.
Are Mice Dangerous?
Mice should never become houseguests in any Massachusetts or New Hampshire home. Despite their unassuming size and appearance, mice are extremely dangerous and destructive.
Hantavirus, salmonella, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV) are just some of the pathogens mice spread that cause illness in people. As mice travel around your home, they leave trails of urine, excrement, shed fur, and bacteria, contaminating food and surfaces.
Mice, with the help of their sharp front incisors, are also very destructive pests. Their presence can cause short circuits and water damage in our homes after chewing through things like wire and pipes. They will also damage drywall, insulation, flooring, trim, cabinets, and furniture. Mice will chew on our clothing, blankets, books, and other personal items as they move around our homes, gathering nesting materials.
Why Do I Have a Mouse Problem?
Mice can move through spaces that are only the diameter of a pencil, so keeping them out of our homes is very difficult without the support of a professional and the implementation of regular pest control services.
Mice eat between 15 and 20 times a day, which means that they are always looking for a reliable food source. Often our yards and homes provide them with the food they are looking for. Once they find food, they are likely to stay and build a nest that puts them near those food sources.
Where Will I Find Mice?
The mouse’s small size and nocturnal nature make it easy for these pests to live near or inside our homes without much notice. Outside, they nest close by our homes in things like woodpiles, gardens, tree stumps, wooded areas, and areas of dense vegetation.
If they find their way inside of your home, they will hide in dark, quiet areas. The most common places where their nests are discovered include:
- Behind wall voids
- In attics
- Above cabinets
- The backs of closets
- Behind appliances
- Under pieces of furniture
Since mice are active at night while we sleep, it is rare to see them in our homes. It is more common to see the signs they leave behind: gnaw marks, droppings, and an unpleasant musty odor.
